A New Inhabitant of the Parking Lot

A 1958 Streamline trailer has made its home behind the art building recently. A joint purchase between the department, Tahoe Gallery and Student Gallery Club, the trailer is destined to become a mobile gallery. Work has already begun on the project and if you are in the area this summer and interested in lending a hand you can find us on Tuesday/Thursday afternoons out in the parking lot. The interior had previously been gutted, but there is a bit of cleaning to be done on the interior walls, buffing and polishing on the exterior, flooring to be laid and other little fun projects.

No new project is complete without a fiasco though, right? Luckily we got that one checked off the list early on. In transporting the trailer up from Reno, we had a small issue with some door hinges that sent a decently sized hunk of aluminum (yes, the door) flying through the air alongside Hwy 395. We were able to toss it into my car and to the amazement of all there was nearly no damage at all. Above is a nice shot of the doorless trailer parked in the meadows alongside Mt. Rose. Classy huh?

Candy Dancers

The annual Candy Dance festival in Genoa came and went last month, and as usual the SNC Gallery Club was in attendance, cooking burgers to raise money for the art department. Unfortunately I had no camera (in the rush to get out the door I left it behind), but Kath McGaughey came to the rescue and documented the experience nicely; all photos are courtesy of her.

The weather was gorgeous on Saturday morning, as seen here through the open roof of the grilling area...


Which of course meant that there was a torrential downpour Saturday afternoon. With an open roof, everyone in the grilling area was pretty much soaked.


But did we despair? Of course not. Look at us. Look at this resilience to adversity.


In fact I think Thomas just danced his way through the entire festival, rain or shine:


All in all a fantastic experience, and we sold every last patty in our possession. We are just that amazing. (Or, you know, burgers are delicious.)

2011 A+E Conference at the NMA - Ticket Sponsorship

Upcoming this month is the Art + Environment Conference at the Nevada Museum of Art (http://nevadaart.org/conference2011/) from September 29 - October 1. The conference "brings together artists, scholars, designers, and writers for a dialogue that fosters new knowledge in the visual arts. During the Conference, the Museum's galleries feature exhibitions that question our relationships with natural, built, and virtual environments, while serving as a springboard for Conference sessions
and keynote presentations."

Art museums can be temples to culture or cultural catalysts. They can be passive and predictable or unpredictably idea-driven. Museums can watch the world pass them by, or they can shape the trajectory of its course. Art and ideas matter here. We see art that challenges minds, melds environments and cultures, and responds to the uncertainties of the future. Art has a point of view and it deserves a voice at the table. That's what the Art + Environment Conference gives it.

This year, Gallery Club has sponsored the purchase of 5 student tickets to the conference. They are opening up eligibility to receive these tickets to all current Sierra Nevada College students. Any interested students can submit a 1-page, double-spaced paper addressing why they would like to attend the conference and what benefit it would have to their work. Submissions are due Tuesday, September 20 and selections will be made by the Fine Arts faculty. Please send all papers to Logan Lape (llape@sierranevada.edu). Notifications will be sent out later that week.

Due to the limited number of tickets available from Gallery Club, they and the Fine Arts Department invite any students not selected to purchase their own ticket join their fellow students at the conference (http://www.nevadaart.org/shop/productview?pid=659).

The Student Gallery is T-Shirt Crazy

What better way kick off a brand new school year than with a brand new shirt? The Student Gallery is looking for your help to make that that possible. Check out the call for entries for the upcoming t-shirt design show, Plastisol. Don't let the image fool you though, the show is not at all limited to screen printed shirts! Any way you can put it on fabric, we're willing to take a look at it.

Oh and did we mention that submissions are free?

It's been down for a few weeks, but I wanted to post these pictures from the "Yes" show curated by the Student Gallery club, which ran in the Reference Gallery. It featured artwork by Nick Geankoplis, Dylan Glasgow, Lexy Eich, Lainie Vreeland, Kath McGaughey, Sarah Beck, Victoria Buck, Marco Ciafarone, Kevin Burnopp, Jill Colbert, Pierre Miller, Alejandra Rubio, and Beau Kissler. For me, the most striking piece was Billy Euler's Duvessa (according to the tag, executed in the medium of "stuff"), a puppet-size sculpture of a figure who seemed to be one third witch, one third pirate, and one third pine cone.

Flat Rate: Gallery Event this Saturday

Please come to the "Reference Gallery" (Prim Library 3rd Floor Hallway) featured event this Saturday evening 5-7pm, "Flat Rate" a Juried Community College Show. The show is the brain child and construction of your very own SNC Gallery Club Students! This Exhibition features artwork from various Bay Area Schools including College of the Sequoias, Diablo Valley College, College of the Siskiyous, Sacramento City College, Sierra College, American River College and many others. We received a number of high quality pieces which are now on display on the 3rd Floor Hallway of Prim Library.


Show Description:

"Flat Rate" is a show for emerging artists from Community Colleges. It’s concept is rooted in the “Flat Rate” size limitations of The US Postal Service’s Priority Mail, Flat Rate Boxes (up to Medium size box).* “With Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes, if it fits in the box, it ships anywhere in the U.S.” The goals of the exhibition are to show case up-and-coming artists of all mediums while exploring the constraint of a physical size category on art works.

Wild Card

If you missed the first SNC Gallery Club show of the semester, "Wild Card," here are a few images from it. The show featured work by Molly Allen, Anza Jarschke, Arielle Shipe, Logan Lape, Nick Geankoplis, and Victoria Buck. I was especially taken by Victoria's "Sorry," which featured a cluster of ceramic flowers, levitated away from the wall with wire, arranged to suggest a human profile dissolving into puffs of cloud. It was a lovely, delicate apology.
